The third break light was originally just a simple idea in the 1970s that was used as a test to see if they would help reduce rear-end crashes. When they applied the third brake lights to some taxis, the results showed that not only did they reduce the number of crashes, but they also helped to prevent as much damage when crashes occurred. Because of the experiment's success, the third brake light eventually became a required feature on all cars in the U.S. by 1986.
